Joana Faber-Barata

Partner, Biologist, Intellectual Property Agent

With a BA in Genetics from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Joana is also a Master and PhD from the Institute of Medical Biochemistry at the same university. She completed a PhD internship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in New York, USA; and postdoctoral fellowships at Weill Cornell Medical College, New York, USA, and at the Faculty of Pharmacy at UFRJ, where she developed projects in the field of immunology and structural biology.

Joana is also the author and co-author of scientific articles published in indexed and peer-reviewed journals in the areas of biochemistry and structural biology, in addition to working on high-resolution protein structures deposited in specialized databases.

Joana has been working with intellectual property since 2012, was a partner in renowned Brazilian offices specialized in the area of ​​intellectual property. Her professional performance has focused on the elaboration of patent applications, the administrative processing of patents, patentability opinions, particularly in the areas of chemistry, biotechnology, molecular biology, medical materials, diagnostics and pharmaceutical products. Joana also works in consultancy regarding access to genetic resources with the Genetic Heritage Management Council (CGEN).

She has been a partner at Msantos Property Intellectual since March 2020, and works as a specialist in patents related to life sciences. She is the mother of three children, enjoys reading fiction and traveling with her family to visit new places.
